When it comes to Scandinavian jacket brands, Didriksons are quickly becoming one of the most recognised and respected names in the UK. Though the brand has a history stretching back to 1913 it is only in recent years their popularity in this country has exploded and now Didriksons are a mainstay in the UK Market. Having developed a reputation for stylish, functional and sustainable rainwear the brand have developed a loyal following for those looking to upgrade their outdoor wardrobe in style.
History of Didriksons
Like many of the brands stocked here at Nordic Outdoor Didriksons have a long history which can be traced back to a company looking to find new ways to tackle the harsh Scandinavian environment. The founders of Didriksons, Hanna and Julius, lived in a small fishing town in the Gothenburg Archipelago and during their childhood years both lost relatives at sea who died due to being poorly clothed for the elements. At the time the clothing worn by Fishermen was in no way waterproof and was often produced from discarded flour sacks. The problem with clothing for Fishermen at the day was so stark that in 1910 more people died at sea due to being poorly equipped than drowned.
In response to these tragedies the couple began experimenting with brushing oils on to garments to make them waterproof and by 1913 had successfully created their first garment that could stand up to the harsh winds and downpours found at sea. It didn’t take long for word of this innovation to spread and Didriksons Regnklädesfabrik (Rainwear Factory) was founded!
Since their foundation the Didriksons brand has always been at the forefront of technology designed to tackle the elements. In 1947 the first machine for welding seams in clothing was invented and Didriksons purchased one the very same year. This machine and the creation of welded seams ensured garments were entirely watertight and opened a new range of possibilities for producers like Didriksons.
The companies growth continued in the post-war period and by the 1970’s Didriksons had over 300 employees and its own factory in Portugal. Not long after however the companies fortunes changed and the brand struggled to keep pace with the new developments in production and textiles. Soon, the dream of remaining independent was taken away as Didriksons were purchased by a large company who owned a portfolio of clothing brands and producers and before long the brand was pushed to the side and at risk of becoming extinct.
Enter Soren Andreasson who recognised the value and beauty in what Didriksons were trying to achieve. By this point the only product which still bore the Didriksons family name was rainsuits for children and it was with this one product that Andreasson decided to build the foundations of the brand on. Working hard to showcase the potential for rainwear and quality outwear Andreasson soon brought Didriksons back from the ashes and from the first order he received in 1998 to today has been a showcase in growth for the Swedish rainwear specialists.
Didriksons have grown to incredible heights since their near collapse in the 1980’s and the family name can now be seen on products the world over along with the year of their foundation. This season is no-exception and is a standout when it comes to quality, sustainable and stylish outerwear.
