The leaves have started changing colour and falling to the ground, the air has a slight chill to it, and the rain is starting to become a daily occurrence. It’s become clear that summer has bid us farewell and autumn has arrived with winter soon to follow. Most of the team here at Nordic Outdoor are excited for the change of season, apart from myself, a warm-blooded Cypriot, I was quite enjoying the hot summer weather. However, living in Scotland, I should have known the heat would be short-lived.
As you all know, with the change of season comes some fantastic new outdoor gear, so that’s something we can all get excited about, even if it’s starting to get cold outside. New and exciting outdoor jackets, sweaters, and accessories have already arrived in our Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Keswick stores, as well as being available online.
Luckily, the new Dale of Norway sweaters arrived just in time for autumn. And believe us, you won’t have any trouble staying warm in these cosy Scandinavian sweaters. Nestled next to fjords in Norway is the small picturesque village of Dale. It was here where Dale of Norway’s founder Peter Jebsen, first established his company. Since then, Dale of Norway has maintained its production in the Dale valley for over 135 years and has continued to create beautiful and functional sweaters. Dale of Norway creates a variety of different knitwear, such as traditional Scandinavian sweaters, sports sweaters, outdoor sweaters, and for those who want a taste of the Viking life, the Viking sweaters. In fact, the Dale of Norway Vikings collection is used as the official garments by the Norwegian Alpine Ski team, the "Attacking Vikings". Outstanding design and function aside, all these amazing winter sweaters are made from 100% natural wool, which as you probably know is one of the most eco-friendly fibres available and is used frequently in the outdoor industry.
Keeping warm is all about those layers. It doesn’t matter if you’re on a casual walk out in town or on an extreme adventure out in nature, it’s essential to layer up properly. If you have been following us long enough, you’ll know that the base layers we love and recommend are by Aclima. There is a huge selection of base layers to choose from when it comes to Aclima, ranging from the 100% Merino wool WarmWool products to their more technical DoubleWool products. This season we have lots of bestselling Aclima products, such as the award-winning WarmWool hooded sweater, in brand new colourways, as well as some new accessories such as hats, socks, and headovers. Aside from the new colours, we have one unique new addition to our Aclima collection. This season Aclima released the first woollen coverall available on the market! It’s ideal for those of you who might be off on an outdoor adventure in the snow as it prevents snow from getting close to your skin. However, it might be slightly too extreme for casual walks out in town. The overall base layer has the same unique hood design as the Aclima Hooded Sweater and is made from 100% merino wool, meaning you’re entire will be nice and warm, even if the overall is wet. It’s always good to note that Aclima is a company that is doing their part for sustainability, which you can find out more about here.
If you’re like us and like sustainable outdoor clothing, then you have probably heard of Houdini Sportswear. All their sportswear and outdoor gear are created with sustainability in mind and they make it their mission to minimize their environmental impact. So, what’s new with Houdini? Well, we have a few exciting new items in this season, one of which is the Spheric Winter Parka Jacket. This winter parka is Houdini Sportswear’s interpretation of the classic winter parka and is by far their warmest jacket. As always, they have picked an environmentally friendly way of production and have used recycled and recyclable fabrics to create the outer material, as well as synthetic padding instead of down for the inside of the jacket. The synthetic padding used for this warm winter coat has a similar warmth to weight ratio as down, however, it performs better when wet. Making it an ideal alternative to a down jacket for those who prefer a “vegetarian” jacket. This winter jacket, like most Houdini Sportswear outdoor gear, is ideal for those who want to enjoy the great outdoors while knowing their gear is from a sustainable and environmentally friendly source.
One of our popular outdoor jackets is the Fjallraven Skogso Jacket. When Fjallraven created this jacket, their aim was to create a well ventilated, functional outdoor jacket with a modern style, making a jacket that you could wear both in the mountains and in town. Needless to say, they were successful. This season we have the Fjallraven Padded Skogso Jacket, as you can probably tell by the name, it’s similar to the Skogso jacket, only it’s padded for extra warmth. The synthetic padding of the jacket is made from G-loft and the outer material is made from the durable Fjallraven G-1000 fabric. If you’re a fan of Fjallraven you already know how brilliant G-1000 fabric is. It’s wind and water resistant and ventilates out body moisture that builds up when you’re being active in the outdoors. You can even wax in up with the Fjallraven Greenland wax which will make the jacket more wind and water resistant.
Although the weather may be getting colder, you can still go on adventures. Be sure to layer up and keep warm!
